The number of preserved plant species in seed gene banks which are established for protect to genetic sources of Turkish transfer of biological diversity to the next generation in Ankara and Izmir provinces reach 110 thousands. These banks work for Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock. Big one of them is in the Field Crops Central Research Institute in Ankara and the small one is in the Aegean Agricultural Research Institute in Izmir.
The first gene bank was found in Izmir province in 1974. Due to the fact that its capacity was inadequate, in 2010 the new gene bank founded in Ankara capital city of Turkey. The new gene bank takes the third place in the world after USA and China.
Gene Bank of Turkey was founded in Ankara in 2010. It is the third big seed bank, with its 300,000 plants capacities, in the world. In this bank also has been worked to preserved of different viruses, bacteria and fungi which they can be use in solving to the problems of industrial and environmental pollution.
Seeds are conserved at minus 18 degrees in the rooms in the Ankara Gene Bank. In addition there is a herbarium in the bank. 15 personnel such as agriculture engineers, chemists, biologists and botanists have been worked in the gene bank of Ankara. Seeds collected from all of the Turkey have been sent to the gene bank by 2,000 of researchers.
Seeds preserved in gene banks use works of research and production.
The authorities said that we don’t just seed conserved, we work to reduce Turkey’s external dependence in seed sector. That is we are developing new varieties such as resistant of diseases, high quality and productive. For example we have succeeded to produce of 100 percent native seeds in the cereals. Certified cereal seeds which are developed among the seeds of gene banks both use in Turkey and export to the abroad.
